Each week the Center for Women Veterans of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs honors women veterans through the "Her Story" campaign. The campaign recognizes the important contributions women Veterans have made in our lives and in the success of our Nation.  To commemorate these lasting and profound contributions women Veterans have made over the course of Nation’s history, VA will celebrate the accomplishments of VA women Veteran employees with “Her Story.”

This week's Honoree: Raquel Riley Thomas

Raquel is currently a Marketing Consultant at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC.   She is responsible for implementing and developing state- of- the art marketing and communication strategies that enhance the Department’s image.

Raquel started her career in 1990 as a photojournalist in the U.S. Army.  Her supervisors noted her professionalism, passion, and integrity and soon thereafter she was chosen to receive a Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship to Hampton University.  Selected as a “Distinguished Military Graduate,” Raquel received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She went on to become an Ordnance Officer in the Army.

Raquel’s accomplishments have been noted both in her military and corporate career.  She was selected as a “Leader of the Future,” by Ebony Magazine and was also featured in “Who’s Who of America.” As an added personal bonus, she was selected as Mrs. Maryland America on June 12, 2010. She will go on to compete against 50 other married women to vie for Mrs. America 2010.  Raquel’s pageant platform is titled “Veterans Employment: Taking Care of Our Heroes and their Families.”

This is a great initiative in my opinion. I am sure that this will give an importance to the women soldiers of our country. Their stories also should be known to the people and what they have contributed to our country.
